Title: Comes the Nigh (Book 1 in the Casters Series)
Author: Norah Wilson & Heather Doherty
Genre: Paranormal

Book Description:
How far would you go to escape your own personal teenage hell? Would you run away, break away from everything you know—even your own body?
Alex Robbins, Brooke Saunders and Maryanne Hemlock could not be more different, yet they all have something in common—deep soul-searing pain. They are also all students at Streep Academy, a boarding school just one step away from juvie, where they've come to complete high school. The three have been relegated to Harvell House, the residence reserved for the hardest cases, the so-called Rejects from Reject Row.
In the forbidden attic of the old Victorian house-turned-residence, the girls discover the diary of Connie Harvell, a young woman who was confined and abused there some 50 years ago. In the end, Connie's attic prison couldn't help her—not completely. She found a way out. At least a dark part of her did. And after reading her diary, the girls discover they can escape at will too. A terrifying, thrilling flight from their bodies and their troubles.
But God help them, their pain isn't all they leave behind when they join with the night.
And God help anyone who's wronged them...

Blog Tour: Water's Blood by Elaine Calloway [Review + Giveaway]

Today I bring you another blog tour, this time hosting a Virtual Book Tour stop for Water's Blood.
Hope you all enjoy it!

Title: Water’s Blood
Author: Elaine Calloway
Published: The Writers Canvas, LLC

Description:
Nature’s Elementals—Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water—have lived for countless millennia. Disguised as humans, they are charged with one mission: protect the innocent from fallen angel clans, who reap human souls and force them to do their bidding.
Brooke, a Water Elemental stationed in New Orleans, broke the rules once—she mated with a human. For her indiscretion, she is forbidden to share a life with her loved ones: NOPD officer Alex and their half-breed daughter, Ella.
Now Ella is about to turn sixteen, and the local clan of fallen angels is determined to snare her soul by Halloween.
Brooke broke the rules once by allowing love to interfere with her mission. Now she and Alex must put consequences aside to break the rules again—if they wish to save their daughter’s soul.

Review:
This book has one of the most beautiful, electric and appealing covers I’ve ever seen—that’s for sure! And that was one of the reasons, probably the main reason actually, why I decided to go ahead and read it—in the end, was it a wise, great, flawless choice? No, possibly not, but there were elements in this story that somehow stood out and that, for now, is, was, enough for me.

Being a first book in a series, a lot of things had necessarily to be explained, and that took time. It is true that the reader stumbles in this crazy world where Fallen Angels haunt humans and humans coexist with Elementals, and that the initial pace of the book is relatively slow—which makes everything a bit confusing—, but once you seriously get into the story and understand a little bit of what’s happening and why is happening, the whole plot starts making sense and the reading process gains enthusiasm and speed.
Brooke is a very steady character. Her gift is unbelievable and the adoration and sorrow she feels for what was taken away from her, due to a mistake on her behalf, is the one thing that truly captivates the reader. She’s strong but delicate, passionate but modest, and, above all, she does everything in her power, even when that means for her to stay away, to give the very best to her daughter, Ella. The relationship she and Alex share is so overwhelming and emotional. Everything is felt from the heart and the reader can’t stop himself to feel compassionate for her because of what both can not have but desperately want to live, experience together.

Another cool aspect of Water’s Blood relies on the second POV the author offers to readers. This might sound a bit weird, but Soren is an awesome character. He is peculiar, charismatic and totally the kind of figure you love to hate. And to be able to perceive his actions and desires in the first person was absolutely amazing, ‘cause he is the evil villain who will do everything to achieve what he wants.
The supernatural side of this book is another kick-ass characteristic with a certain uniqueness that captivates the readers’ attention. All the Elementals are extraordinarily special and out of the ordinary but at the same time, they all have limitations and because they are not invincible and indestructible that makes them even more human.
Sadly, I did found this book to be a little too long. For all the things were left unexplained, I was hoping to get more answers and more mysteries solved. Yes, this is just a first book in a series, I know, but in a more particular level, I was eagerly expecting more. Overall, it was a satisfying reading that did not start in the best of ways, but that somehow showed enough distinctive aspects to sustain “herself”.

About the author:
Elaine Calloway is originally from New Orleans and can still do a decent Cajun accent upon request. She is currently writing the Elemental Clan Series, a series of paranormal tales set in iconic cities such as New Orleans. Book Two, Raging Fire, will be released summer 2013.

Blog Tour: Anomaly by JC Emery [Review]

Today I bring you another blog tour/book blitz, this time hosting a tour for Anomaly Release Day Blitz.
Hope you all enjoy it!

Title: Anomaly
Author: JC Emery
Published: Left Break Press

Description:

How far would you go to save your sister?
Life as a college senior is stressful enough. Between mid-terms, stupid boys, and a rare blood condition, Eliza Landry is just trying to figure out what normal is—whatever that means—when she discovers that vampires aren’t just a thing of legend.
In a matter of moments, her life changes forever when she and her older sister Kate suffer a vampire attack which leaves Eliza with two puncture wounds on her neck and an allergy to sunlight. But she’s still human, or at least she thinks she is. It doesn’t really matter—her main concern is that her sister is missing.
Sorrow turns to obsession, leading Eliza to piece together the puzzle of that terrifying night. Even stumbling upon a millennia-old vampire assassin named Luke Conrad who either wants to kill her or kiss her (she can't decide) cannot deter her.
When bodies start piling up and one of them is supposedly Kate, Eliza and Luke set out to discover who is behind the attacks. Soon, Eliza is drawn into the dark and dangerous world of the undead, with no guarantee she’ll make it out alive, and no doubt that she won’t like what she finds.

Review:
I can’t ask for a better thing, a better feeling, than the one that consumes my soul whenever a book turns out to be a massive surprise. I’m still not quite sure what was it that I was expecting from this story, but no doubt in my mind that this wasn’t it. Anomaly is such a refreshing read in the vampire themed story that I continue to be astonished by it. Everything about it is odd and different and invigorating, and I find that to be extremely important when vamps are the creatures being portrayed. I’ve read so many variations of this genre before, with girls being turned and then falling in love with their masters, that I’m always looking for the next big thing, the next great novelty, the next risky fresh, creative vibe. JC Emery definitely pulled this one off successfully.

Eliza is the essence of this book but, for me, Kate was the one that constantly made me wonder and question her sanity, and that kept me on edge due to her unexpected growth and transformation throughout the story. She used to have this sweet and caring side, this charisma that would easily lighten up an entire room, but then everything was destroyed and all that was left was this bitter, mean person of hers. Her sister, on the other hand and because it is her perspective the one given to readers, sends out this strong sense of familiarity and closeness that’s from utter importance. In the beginning, she’s this fragile young woman who has been affected by an illness all of her life, but once she’s attacked and Kate disappears, something in her changes and she ends up becoming this kick-ass heroin that no one expects her to be.

I really did enjoy the way Emery built her story, although there were a couple of things more towards the end that didn’t completely convince me. I believe it was positively clever of her to show that the thing that matters the most is finding Kate, so that the vampire aspect of the story comes out in second plan. I felt much more attached to the story and to Eliza’s fears and despairs because of this choice than I would have ever had if Emery had decided to put all the importance and attention in Eliza’s transformation into some kind of weird and unknown creature. Too bad Luke wasn’t much of a supporting character. I can’t say I didn’t like him ‘cause I did, and he sure had his moments but I don’t think he was giving the care he deserved and, due to that, he wasn’t able to really fulfil the steps of mysterious love interest.

There were times, so many, many times, when I wanted to give this book a complete 5 stars… but as soon as the ending was coming clearer and nearer things just stopped happening with the same intensity has they had been happening. The pace slowed down, the majority of the questions kept unanswered and the way the book ended was way too weird. I wanted to know more about The Legion and The Guard, I wanted to try and understand what was it that really happen to Kate and the reason that made her act the way she did, but nothing was given to me and because of that I felt a bit numb and totally confused. I hope, with all my strengths, that the next book in the series brings some answers ‘cause I really want them now! Can’t stand this curiosity for much longer...

About the author:
As a child, JC was fascinated by things that went bump in the night. As they say, some things never change. Now, as an adult, she divides her time between the sexy law men, mythical creatures, and kick-ass heroines that live inside her head and pursuing her bachelor’s degree in English. As it is for most writers, finding balance is a challenge.
JC is a San Francisco Bay Area native, but has also called both Texas and Louisiana home. She was born to a pair of crazy amazing parents whom she often draws inspiration from and who have supported her no matter how flighty her ambitions may be. She is blessed with a sister, eleven years her junior, who she also calls her friend. With the support and encouragement of her parents behind her, JC set out to figure out what she wanted to do when she grew up. Most days, the jury is still out; but the thing that stuck with her no matter what she pursued was her love of the written word.
JC writes adult, new adult, and young adult fiction. She dabbles in many different genres including science fiction, horror, chick lit, and murder mysteries; but she is most enthralled by supernatural stories-- and everything has at least a splash of romance.
Marital Bitch is JC’s first completed novel and the first book in the Men with Badges series.

Review:
Wow, what a story!
I don’t think I have enough good words to fully express how special this book is—at least, not yet. It’s not only spectacular—for me—because it’s part of my first ever Blog Tour, but it is so mainly due to how different and fresh and original it truly is when compared to most of the books I’ve been reading lately. I have never read anything like Inceptio before. The way Morton developed the story with something new and thrilling always happening, the characters that ultimately are so believable, and the creation of Roma Nova by itself, all these things together are somewhat pretty amazing.

I really liked Morton’s writing. It is not only quite different from what I’ve come across so far, as it also shows that everything she puts on paper turns out to be important somehow. I also very much enjoyed the true balance between dialogue and narrative, especially because, as a reader, I felt all the good, the bad and the utterly scary thins going on on Karen’s life and, to me, that’s one of the most imperative components in a book. Plus, every single character I found it to be extremely well built and solid. It never mattered how significant their part was in the story, it never mattered how big or small their “physical” presence throughout the book was, all the background, all the crucial information about what motivated them, what made them want to act, want to love, want to protect, is there. This allows the reader to somehow connect with the central people in the story, and to allow himself a chance at being part of the adventure instead of only watching, reading about it.
I particularly liked Karen. She’s an enormously curious and active figure, with a strong personality and a huge amount of bad luck, especially in the first half of the book. Since everything happens to her all the time, the way she responds to problems and to all the new stuff occurring in her life ends up being one of the most interesting aspects of this book. She’s that edgy, exceptional kind of character that in a crazy way captivates the readers attention and even when the book is over, when there’s no more pages left, she’s still pretty much in readers’ thoughts. Renschman was a huge contributor to that unique alliance between reader and heroine. He’s such a damaged man, who helplessly watches everything getting out of his control, that becoming the “evil” character, the villain, was precisely what we could do best. And what a scary guy he turned out to be! It gave me the creeps more than once.

Another element that completely caught me by surprise was the alternate reality—I was aware of this when I first started the book but I could have never imagined how plausible and appealing Roma Nova would turn out to be in the end. I’m a woman so… this would definitely be the most amazing and exciting place for me to live in; but that aside, this is a country that speaks for itself and that’s unbelievably beautiful for the way it keeps its inheritance alive. I couldn’t help myself to fall deeply in love with it—and not because Nonna and Conrad are locals!
Intriguing, imaginative and with a sturdy political side to it—that completely fascinated me—this is the perfect book to anyone who is looking for something different and unusual. I can’t wait for the sequel!

About the author:
A 'Roman nut' since age 11, the mosaics in Ampurias (Spain) triggered her wondering what a Roman society would be like if run by women. That idea bubbled away in her head for years.
Playing around with words much of her life - playwright (aged 7), article writer, local magazine editor and professional translator - she came to novel writing in reaction to a particularly dire film:
'I could do better that that,' she whispered in the darkened cinema.
'So why don't you?' replied her other half.
Three months later, she had completed the first draft of INCEPTIO.
After a West Kent childhood and uni in Leeds, Alison worked as a civil servant in the City of London, dealt in coins and antique jewellery, head-hunted chief executives, served as a Territorial Army officer and owned a translation company. With a BA in French, German and Economics, she went back thirty years and bagged an MA in History. She now lives in France with her husband.
Pursuing her interest in women's history and a nod to her own military service, Alison published a history eBook Military or Civilians? The curious anomaly of the German Women's Auxiliary Services during the Second World War in March 2012.
